How could we offer older people who sell their produce in the center of Jilotepec a safe, clean marketplace? It had to be in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 8 of decent work and economic growth.

To get involved with this question, it is important to understand the existing context:

11.3% of the population of Edomex is over 60 years old

32% of them suffer from some physical limitation

41% are economically active

The market stall is a part of a space which is inherently complex and in which people interact every day. We needed to develop a space that offered:

Integration. Making people a part of the space

Unity. Creating a sense of belonging to unite its members

Identity. Transmitting a message that identifies them

A stall is not just the place to put the produce. A stall is a place where people interact. There is dialog, negotiation, and an interaction between two individuals who, in many cases, may have just met.

We developed a proposal that unifies the interactions between the seller, the customer and the produce, creating a space without limits where the seller can direct the flow.

The structure, made of folded metal, offers a support surface on which to display the seller’s produce and safe seating for elderly people.

Awards:

  • Premio Nacional de Diseño 2022. Honorific mention

Role: Research, Conceptualization, Design lead, Visualization
